reviews: sideshow unattraction

“Here is a left–field gem that sounds like it could have been recorded in 1971 off of Sunset Boulevard. This is a vaguely country-rock-ish styled CD that is grounded firmly in the sounds of sunny California from another time. For those familiar with the General Store, you will find some familiar territory with the sounds of the early Eagles, Gene Clark, Quiver, Crazy Horse & Neil Young, early Jackson Browne, The Band and George Harrison. The songs embrace bathes the inner ear in an elegant hushed warm surrender to their charms. Very highly recommended.”

"On Sideshow Unattraction, James Clark, namesake singer-songwriter for Toronto folk-rock outfit The James Clark Institute, laments the drowning death of his heart on 'Lake Monona Last Night' and reminisces on the acoustic ballad "Monstrous" (shout out to Neil Young's greatest hits and REM on cassette), in the Thailand-laden imagery of "Bettie Page Rides A Donkey" and declares his wish on the sprightly 'Girl Heroine.' The guy should start writing a novel."

"At last! Brilliantly written acoustic born alternative pop/rock songs expertly performed with little touches of 'Squeeze/Costello/Finn' style production affluence just about sums up this astonishing album from what I consider to be one of Canada's finest and highly individual songwriters."

"No One Like Me hits you and sticks with you. Worst Photograph is a good image. House For Sale has good energy.

"Clark's deceptively merry way of relaying (his) stories feels like a catch-up with a loveably offbeat cousin, who has never quite managed to get it all together. Ultimately a storyteller. Clark seems to have found a creative niche to please those who like their singer/songwriters a little off centre.
