In February 2008 as the recording of "Sideshow Unattraction" was winding down, I decided to paint a full size sideshow banner to accompany the record. The idea was to shoot it for the inside sleeve of the CD and to use it as a backdrop at live shows. The characters/images on the banner would all be taken from various songs on the record. I really had no idea what I was in for. I had not painted anything in my life besides my bedroom when I was eighteen and some abstract stuff done with my fingers during my initial school years. Turning one of the offices here at Room 5 Records into an artist's den (and a complete and utter mess) and with guidance from Roy Kohn, (please check out his banners at www.weseeinc.com) I dove right in. Between February and April I learned many things about myself...mostly that I weep easily. But there's also something about painting your heart out on canvas while the rest of the world sleeps that makes one feel alive. At the time of this work, I hadn't felt that way in several years. |
